Rothuizen spent a few years not painting in New York. Instead, he spent his days wandering the streets talking to homeless guys, writing stories and making a less formal art– a project that cannot be easily framed and hung on the wall. He made this book as “a way to put all the drawings, photos, objects, paintings, and texts side-by-side so together they resemble a street or even a city that you can wander through.”

In New York, Jan Rothuizen (1968, NL) left his studio to go out into the streets. The often disarmingly honest accounts of his endless wanderings through the city read like a personal diary. Yet the brilliant typography (the typed text was made to look handwritten, by using tracing paper) and well balanced combination of text and image make this book a self-contained artwork.
